For Thanksgiving we went to Poland. We spent the majority of our time in Krakow, but our final day was spent at one of the most infamous concentration camps, Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau. I thought I had prepared myself, but being there was simply overwhelming.
Auschwitz II - Birkenau was massive. A lot of buildings were destroyed before the war was over, but the chimney stacks remain.
Walking along the platform and the path towards the crematoriums was daunting. This place was huge and is the site where over a million individuals were brutally killed. The deceit, willingness, acceptance, fear, hatred, defeat, death and so much more is baffling to me. It's hard to express what I felt there, but will never forget them.
